January 7, 2025Today ten Quaker organizations from different countries have coordinated withdrawing from Twitter/X! When we heard about this initiative we were immediately in unity.
Canadian Friends Service Committee—the national peace and social justice agency of Quakers in Canada—had already been debating leaving X for some time. There were three reasons for this:
- We were troubled by weakened moderation rules that have allowed disinformation and extreme and hateful content to flourish.
- A few years ago Twitter was the platform where we got the most engagement with our content. When it became X, changes to the algorithm caused that engagement to plummet.
- Many of our supporters had already left X.
We were interested to learn that Quaker organizations in other countries, some with larger followings than CFSC, were having the same experiences.
In disengaging from X today we’re joined by: Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC, the global body of Friends) including their Europe and Middle East Section and Section of the Americas, Quaker Council for European Affairs (Belgium), Quakers in Britain, Quakers in Ireland, The Friend (Quaker magazine in England), Woodbrooke (Quaker learning organisation in England), Friends Committee on National Legislation (US), Friends Journal (Quaker magazine in the US), and Pendle Hill (Quaker learning organization in the US).
Although we won’t be posting any more, CFSC’s account won’t be deleted so that no one else can take over our username @CFSCQuakers and spoof it.
